Al Gore dropped out of site not long after he lost to George W. Bush in the US elections of the year 2000. Astrologers were divided then, as they are now, about who had the upper hand as far as aspects that show the candidate most favored by aspects. It wasn’t easy then and it isn’t easy now to determine who will be the next US president. That is because there are always several prominent aspects in each contender’s horoscope when they are engaged in a “battle” to win. It takes tremendous energy and a serious intent on the part of a candidate, and astrological aspects reflect the intense activity in each one’s chart. It has to manifest this way for each person running, and among all the aspects there are none that are fool-proof to predict the winner ahead of time.

Even in the case of Bill Clinton winning the election in the year 1992; the race was close and there were promising aspects for both candidates. And how many astrologers would have suspected that a Transit Saturn Opposite Natal Pluto on election day would thrust Clinton into the White House? Many would have thought that a Saturn aspect would lead to disappointing results. On the other hand, Saturn is often present when responsibilities are increased in a person’s life. And so it was in 2000, and is today, that it is difficult to predict which planets and their aspects will tip the scales.

And as outcomes go, astrologers lucky enough to be on the side of the winner of a fifty/fifty chance they are betting on, won’t prove to be much of an accomplishment. If there were 10 candidates to choose from, then picking the winner would draw more respect from fellow astrologers. Perhaps astrologers need to prove themselves in the primaries when there are more individuals in the race, and focus less on determining which one of only two contenders will get the brass ring.

Outcomes of competitions of all types can be determined by horary charts, however, if there is no personal stake in the conflict or competition, horary astrology sadly lacks the capacity to glean results.

Al Gore was Vice President of the US for eight years, and for those years he was the astoundingly literal manifestation of his 11 degrees Aries Sun (shown in the chart by the blue circle); The president of the country. Although Gore did not take the reins as the supreme leader of the country, he did win the popular vote and so technically was the president in the hearts of the majority. But being Vice President was close enough to reveal how these symbols can be so profound in showing us that there is an uncanny mirroring of character and events in the relationship of Sabian Symbols to people’s lives.

The long red arrow shows Transit Uranus exactly Opposite Natal Saturn on election day, and in Gore’s case, this type of aspect brought disappointment instead of increased responsibilities as it was for Bill Clinton with the Saturn/Pluto dynamic. For Gore, the Progressed Saturn, Pluto and Uranus played a harsh trio for Gore at this time in his life. Both Saturn and Pluto in Progression returned to exact birth localities, and Uranus in Transit brought the picture into sharp and poignant disappointment.

Gore’s environmental activism and social responsibility shows up in the very tight Natal Opposition of 9th house Sun to Neptune in the 3rd house of Environment. This Opposition is in Cardinal signs and shows a lean toward activism and concern for critical and political issues. The Sun in the 9th house promises publishing possibilities and so it was in 1992 that Earth in the Balance had its debut.

Julian Assange hacked into Pentagon files when he was 15 years old. His curiosity about the mind of America is seen in the comparison of the birth chart of Assange with the US Natal Chart.

It is best to ignore the connections of planets to the Houses, Moon, Midheaven and Nadir, because the time of the US Natal chart is disputed, and the time of birth for Assange is questionable as well. But there is every reason to take note of the exact Conjunction of Mercuries between their charts, in fact this is the prime reason for the connection. Mercury in the US chart is Retrograde, showing a desire to keep sensitive material secret and for doing things in a subversive manner is shown by the US Pluto’s Retrograde movement Opposite its own natal Mercury. Pluto is synonymous with power and intrigue, but is also Probity. Mercury in Assange’s chart is Direct and his brand of truth is straight-forward and invasive, which challenges a country that prefers to do things in clandestine fashion.

In 1986, Assange was 15 years old and Transit Saturn was opposing his natal Saturn. **Every seven years Saturn makes the Square and Opposition aspects with itself in a person’s horoscope. But as well as being part of a Saturn cycle, transit Pluto was coming close to making a conjunction to Assange’s Moon position. The desire to probe, and the ability to do so, was intense because of the Pluto factor. The red lines in the chart below point out the transit Saturn opposition to its natal placement and its conjunction with natal Neptune.

The three blue circles show the segments that create a SPLAY Temperament Type; the pyramiding development of personality with a great potential for inner stability. Mars is by itself in one of the three segments, and that designates it as the High Focus Reins planet, which turns what would usually be capacity for Initiative into an INDOMITABLE source of direction. This gives the native a tenacious hold on anything that inspires and excites – he will never give up. Mars is in the sign of Loyalty, and anyone who is a friend, is a friend for life – any goal, is a goal for life.

The ephemeris graph for July 1971 shows that Assange’s progressed Sun on the 18th conjuncts not only his own Mercury degree at age 15, but it activates his connection with the US Mentality and its body of confidential information. Progressed, Secondary planet positions are calculated by counting each day after birth to correspond with each year after birth. Day 15 after birth corresponds to year 15 when the Sun is in 25 degrees Cancer.

The Sabian Symbol for the degree is, “A dark shadow or mantle thrown suddenly over the right shoulder. The Keyword is DESTINY. When positive, the degree is some dramatic manifestation of genius vital to the general welfare of man, and when negative, a tendency to unwarranted presumption if not outright megalomania.”

It is helpful to note that the green line pointing from Jupiter in 24 degrees Scorpio to Saturn in 2 degrees Gemini shows that there is a Sharp Destiny that Assange must recognize as part of his life organization. When the planetary pair of Jupiter and Saturn are in Square or Opposition the life develops with limitations that compel the native to follow a narrow and designated path. When the pair are in Conjunction, Sextile or Trine, the life is considered a Loose Destiny, and there is more freedom to enjoy a path according to one’s own dictates.

From The Essentials, page 124: Jupiter and Saturn in an Opposition aspect indicate an ordering of life’s fundamental motives through which the native usually is compelled to dramatize himself continually in the presence of his fellows, at least if he wishes to participate with them in any course of everyday experience. This necessity often tends to throw a given lifetime into two entirely separate periods, with the latter revealing a greater depth and continuity of realization as a perhaps unsuspected consequence of the mirroring it has given itself through some more superficial role-playing in the former. There may be either prodigal expenditure of the self’s resources, with their ultimate recapture in a refinement of soul, or a moral vacillation that accentuates every weakness of character and so encourages a surrender to a final and hopeless ineptitude.

The question now is, what were the astrological aspects when Assange was arrested Dec 7, 2010? The ephemeris graph of August 1971 shows progressed Mercury stationary turning retrograde and progressed Neptune stationary turning direct to correspond with age 39. Most likely the arrest at age 41 was a result of developments from involvements corresponding to the Stations two years prior. A cloud seems to hover over the rape allegations thanks to the often obscured facts when Neptune takes part in the configurations. Mercury turning retrograde shows an inclination to retreat into oneself, harboring feelings of isolation. No doubt these feelings are real since being granted asylum and confined at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.

As of August 22, 2016, in one month, Assange’s Progressed Moon will conjunct the US Sun degree at 13 Cancer 07.  A progressed Moon aspect is a two month period consisting of the entering, exact and leaving dates, and may indicate further involvement and interaction between Assange and the United States.

Update: Added March 15, 2018:

The Assange Moon progression, conjunct the US natal Sun mentioned above, corresponds to the Wikileaks “dumping” of damaging emails just prior to the US Presidential elections that allegedly cost Hillary Clinton the presidency. Wikipedia puts the date at July 22, 2016, just two months prior to the exact Conjunction of Assange’s Progressed Moon on the US natal Sun. This is close enough to show real planetary activity, however it shows that the Assange natal Moon position can be off at least one degree as a result of a miscalculated birth time. This may be a perfect indicator to take into account for a chart rectification.

The 2016 Democratic National Committee email leak is a collection of Democratic National Committee (DNC) emails stolen by Russian intelligence agency hackers and subsequently published (leaked) by DCLeaks in June and July 2016 and by WikiLeaks on July 22, 2016. This collection included 19,252 emails and 8,034 attachments from the DNC, the governing body of the United States’ Democratic Party. The leak includes emails from seven key DNC staff members, and date from January 2015 to May 2016. The leaked contents, which suggested the party’s leadership had worked to sabotage Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, prompted the resignation of DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz before the Democratic National Convention. 

Further interesting Progressions come in 2020. On March 31, 2020 there will be a Progressed Lunation at 28 degrees Leo, shown circled in red. Progressed Lunations are an aspect that lasts approximately 3 years. One feels the aspect about a year and a half before, and the effect lasts about a year and a half after. This is an ending of a 30 year cycle and the beginning of a major change and seeds planted for a new direction in the life. It is not an easy aspect to experience, because of the letting go of the past that is associated with it. But in Assange’s case letting go of the time spent in confinement at the Ecuadorian Embassy could be a relief, if the Aspect outlines a positive experience. There may be a rewarding change as two months before the Progressed Lunation the Moon makes a Conjunction with Progressed Venus. Venus brings things to conclusion and Venus is in the Sabian Symbol degree of A rainbow. 

LEO 26 A rainbow This is a symbol of the over-all realization which comes to man for his guidance whenever he strives to reach his goals of a more enduring sort. Here is assurance of divine participation in the most unpromising of human relationships. The individual learns that there is a consistent ordering throughout the world in which he finds himself, and that nature will co-operate effectively with every vision he chooses to keep alive on his own account. The keyword is SIGNIFICANCE. When positive, the degree is a sense of very real spiritual power and presence in all personal effort and desire, and when negative, an uncritical acceptance of every passing hope or dream as something on which to depend.

Venus often is the harbinger of the finalization of issues. This may turn to a negative as easily as it could represent a positive indication. More research into the charts dynamic is required to give any form of prediction.

It was in 2011 and 2012 during his Saturn Return, that Edward Snowden’s conscience directed him to right a wrong he witnessed as a contractor for the National Security Agency (NSA). Normally it is our responsibility to right the wrongs we ourselves commit. That’s one of Saturn’s jobs; it gives us conscience, a knowing that what we do has its consequences. Gathering information and betraying the American public, doing surveillance on innocent, unknowing and average citizens, who are minding their own lives, was not what Snowden believed to be necessary to keep our country safe from terrorism. And to top it off, “seeing the Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper, directly lie under oath to Congress.” as Snowden pointed out in 2014, was the breaking point. That’s the way Saturn functions in human consciousness; it tells you when you are doing something wrong, and it also allows you to judge others for the right and wrong they do. Observing an infringement on the rights and privacy of the American public just didn’t sit well with Snowden, to say the least, and there was an impulse to right the wrong by an act of exposing, or whistle blowing. Consequences are not a consideration when you feel it is your duty to act, to protect, and enlighten. It’s simply a sacrifice of your life for the welfare of others.

Because of the ubiquitous presence of the personal computer and especially the cell phone that Steve Jobs and others gave to the world, the US government has been able to track the time and location of all calls made from a private cell phone. The US government imposed mandates on large corporations to supply them with detailed private data. There were files, and there was access to them for Snowden as well. He was respected in the NSA for his exceptional brilliance and therefore was trusted. That gave him the open door to gather information and expose it to the world to set things right according to his perspective.

Snowden believes that one should be concerned about what your government is doing, even if you have nothing to hide. It’s a matter of principle. And the principle is that your privacy is not a matter that is your concern alone, but the entire population must at some point be the monitor of the nation wherein it abides. There has been a lot of controversy over this issue and in the US the conversation has been whether Snowden is a hero or a traitor. “That is beside the point,” the genius and self-proclaimed watchdog pointed out. The point is that you are being spied on without your knowledge or permission, and that is an act against your freedom, privacy and rights as stated in the US Constitution.

Although the Transit Saturn Return had already passed its natal position in his chart, Snowden was still within the orb of its tense and sensitive influence. Snowden spent a day at the Hong Kong airport seeking to escape being noticed by authorities. His search for asylum elsewhere was excruciatingly intense for him and his adviser, protector and WikiLeaks researcher, Sarah Harrison. But as luck or fate would have it, the US government had not yet canceled Snowden’s passport, so he and Harrison were able to board a flight to Moscow, where to this day Snowden is in exile. Saturn rewards as well as corrects, if living in exile in a foreign country could be considered a reward.

Saturn Return’s are known to bring the father of an individual into one’s immediate circumstances. And so it was that Lonnie Snowden was approached by the US government asking if he would assist them in the initial contact with his son in Russia. Of course the senior Snowden was willing, however, the son saw it as a trap. He believed that the US government officials were going to lure him onto a airplane and lock the door behind him. And so that scenario did not take place.

Ed Snowden has Natal Pluto Conjunct his Natal Saturn and this greatly amplifies his ability to sense and be aware of things beyond the normal scope of actuality. And this Conjunction transforms a normal Saturn Return into something of much greater significance. Great depth of wisdom is manifested through this type of planetary pairing. Pluto represents all manner of complexity and profundity, and brings an otherwise personal experience into the realm of penetrating the greater community’s psyche. In some ways it is difficult to understand the demands of a Pluto aspect, but coupled with Saturn it points to the seriously deep political and moral issues that have been raised by Snowden’s covert gathering of information that was ultimately revealed to the masses through the vehicle of traditional journalistic media.

The Sabian Symbol for Natal Saturn at 28 degrees Libra is A man in the midst of brightening influences. No matter what anyone thinks of this young man, he did take it upon himself to act in defense of those unaware of the intrusions into their privacy that lurked within their personal computers and cell phones – all in the name of national security. It was Saturn’s consciousness, enhanced by Pluto’s obsession with Truth that motivated Snowden to expose wrongdoing.

The complete symbol 28 Libra:

LIBRA 28 A man in the midst of brightening influences This is a symbol of the enduring rewards of life whenever it is taken seriously in its own fundamental terms or accepted with a realization of the underlying friendliness of the world at large. The chart has an Opposition in Mutable signs giving Snowden a *Mutable Natural Disposition, and therefore people-oriented. It was with thought of the welfare of others that he exposed the US government’s covert activities. Snowden’s Sun is also in a Mutable sign bringing real depth to his commitment to his fellows. It is necessary to point out that the Natal Uranus Opposite Natal Mercury indicates the brilliance that comes to those with this combination of the planet of mind with the planet of ingenuity and genius. It also gives the native the potential to act apart from society’s usual restrictions.

The Declaration of Independence states:

That its people are: . . . endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights . . . That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Snowden and other so called whistle-blowers have not come out and said they are exposing truths and hidden agendas for the purpose of abolishing the government, but to create change for the better within the rights a citizen holds. They are committed to protecting privicy and freedom in the only way they can, and that is by revealing what they have discovered to an population unawares their rights are being threatened. They are not accusing, but exposing evidence, and leaving it up to the public to decide the fate of an otherwise duped populace. Whistle-blowers reveal information they have access to that pose an infringement on the unalienable rights of people and society as a whole. They are guardians of justice, although their tactics border on unlawfulness, they are brave, they take risks, and lay down their lives for their “friends.” And in whose hands is it to judge who is acting on behalf of the principles of moral integrity and a compulsion to improve the status quo? Are we to rely on “officials” at every turn of events? Can we not practice our right to free-speech, even when it involves laying the situation bare in the name of probity?

In the future, Snowden will have Progressed Jupiter turn Stationary Direct. That is in 2021 when Snowden is 38 years old. Progressed Stations mark off great transitions in life. “Direct rise from lowliness and obscurity to power and influence.” This quote from the I Ching – Chinese Book of Changes,¹ aptly describes Winston Churchill’s life leading up to WWII and his rise to heroic accomplishment after his appointment as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

THE PROGRESSED PLUTO STATION

Churchill was at a very low point in his political career in early 1940 when he began using his skillful rhetoric to awaken the British populace concerning Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich and the Nazi threat across Europe. Churchill was 66 years old when Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, who advocated to appease Hitler, was forced to resign by both the Opposition as well as his own Conservative party. Churchill was subsequently catapulted into the position of Prime Minister in his stead. Churchill’s secondary progressions for the year 1940 show a significant dynamic² aspect corresponding to critical change in store for both the native and the country for which he was the surrogate leader. As Churchill took power, his progressed Pluto was stationing to go direct. Astrologers often overlook the profound influence of a progressed station; however, they are indicators of life transitions which can disrupt the flow of a native’s habitual pattern of activity. In this case of the Prime Minister who led England to victory, we witness how his vital, progressed stationary Pluto corresponds to the long-lasting peace of future generations of not only his own country, but of the entire world.

Pluto’s keyword shifts from Transcendence to Probity when highly active in the nativity. When in its positive manifestation, the planet encourages a native’s total submission to higher principles revealed through enlightened intuition and empowers leaders with wisdom when confronting formidable enemies. Churchill, himself, credited heavenly powers for the protection he received when mingling with civilians immediately after the bombings of London during the Blitz. The planet represents a universal force interacting within society through those who hold the reins of temporal powers. Pluto is the prime architect during times of great causes and their global consequences, in contrast with the swift-moving planets that have jurisdiction over more mundane and local considerations.

Swiftly coming into power and authority, or an abrupt and complete loss of it, often comes about during Pluto’s transits and progressions to the natal chart’s planets. These radical changes in a person’s life are mapped and mirrored by Pluto’s aspects whether in regard to interactions with the natal chart’s planets, or in a possible standalone progressed period. Marc Edmund Jones gives important details of progressed stations in his Scope of Astrological Prediction:

Planetary Stations are established when a planet in secondary progression appears* to come to a rest in the zodiac and begins to move retrograde instead of direct or vice versa. If the change is to retrograde the indication is more personal or intimate and if to direct it is more impersonal.

The phenomenon in progressions always identifies a subtle or psychological shift in the fundamental course of life** such as requires a critical regrasp of experience and often proves to be an adjustment over an appreciable span of time whether marked by some single sharp event of easy identification or by a complex syndrome of changes of less obvious interrelation.

THE TRANSITS

Pluto in 1940 plays a role in both transits and progressions as they correspond to the dramatic show of the rise of the politician with a passion to defend his country and obliterate the Third Reich. On May 10, 1940, Winston Churchill took the reins of government and ultimately led his people to victory. On the very same day that he stepped into the job, the Germans were at the door of Holland, yet another country incapable of defending itself from formidable Nazi aggression. Although Churchill had a history of failures as well as successes, he was appointed to do the mammoth task that was carved out for him by fate. Not only was progressed Pluto stationary at the time he took the helm, but throughout the war years from 1943 to 1945 transit Pluto was aligning itself in opposition to his natal Saturn. An activated Saturn obliges a person to assume personal and grave responsibilities. This gave the native an opportunity to make use of his acquired wisdom and to be Shrewd (Saturn’s keyword when in High Focus) when faced with a powerful adversary. Saturn acts in disjunctive fashion as it drops all superfluous pursuits to focus solely on immediate objectives.

In Churchill’s book, Painting as a Pastime, he tells us that he was prey to the “worry and mental over-strain experienced by persons who, over prolonged periods, have to bear exceptional responsibilities and discharge duties upon a very large scale.” This revealing statement combines the long-term broad outreach of Pluto aspects with the personal and inescapable responsibilities brought on by Saturn’s involvement. Both planets draw leadership qualities to the forefront. With an inadequate response to the planets’ “demands,” there can be a real crisis in consciousness. Fortunately for the world, Churchill was equal to the task.

The transit chart for 6:00 pm May 10, 1940, shows the real-time, orbiting planet placements as they interact with Churchill’s natal chart. The planetary contacts are few but powerful and correspond to the request from King George VI³ for Churchill to take on the role of Prime Minister. Transit Jupiter also brings forth leadership qualities to the situation as the fortuitous planet makes an exact conjunction with Churchill’s natal Neptune at the time. The Jupiter aspect refers to the authority the new Prime Minister enthusiastically assumed within the strain of compelling obligation. Transit Uranus is also present through its exact conjunction with natal Pluto, revealing the impetus toward Churchill’s sudden catapult to power, virtually giving him untrammeled control. Lastly, the transiting Moon at the Midheaven, the place of authority, sextiles his own natal Moon to complete the symbolic layout of influential aspects mirroring the extraordinary, corresponding event of taking charge.

THE MARS SABIAN SYMBOL

Although not configured in any significant way is natal Mars. However, the Sabian symbol for the planet of Initiative is quite telling of a period in Churchill’s life that gives background to his accomplishments during WWI. He was First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 to 1915 which his Mars Sabian symbol rounded to 17 degrees Libra expresses literally:

LIBRA 17 A retired sea captain This is a symbol of what ultimately must be an entirely personal enjoyment of reality, or an indomitable sustainment of man’s world in the precise terms of his own special participation in its varying aspects. There is here a completeness of self-consummation through a gift for bringing all prior factors of realization to focus in the present moment. The self is secure because it has made its peace with every separate potentiality of its being. The keyword is RELAXATION. When positive, the degree is an utter fidelity to the lessons learned from experience and a consequent unshakeable poise in embarking on any new enterprise, and when negative, idle contemplation of past achievement.⁴

THE ALL-IMPORTANT SUN

If the birthtime is accurate, Churchill’s reputation as a great orator is shown in the 3rd house placement of his natal Sun. The 3rd house brings words and communication to the forefront and the Sun itself lays bare the purpose of one’s incarnation and the role one must play on the stage of life. The Sabian symbol for 8 degrees Sagittarius is Rocks and things forming within. COMPOSITION is the keyword, and when positive, the degree is “exceptional ability to mold or remold the course of events.” That he did, while taking part in the navigation of the Allies through the war years. The negative of the degree, “persisting inner confusion,” gives supporting evidence of the debilitating stress of a weakly configured Grand Cross, caused by Saturn and Pluto over the general orb allowance by two degrees. A Grand Cross, also known as a Grand Square, can lead to a diffusion of the native’s energies when attempting to reach out to too many directions at once. The four prongs of the Cross tend to vie for attention, making it difficult to focus on one important astrological, house Circumstance. Lacking the singular focus that a T Cross Focal Determinator facilitates, the Grand Cross instead, can cause one to lose their foothold in events when considering too many factors at once. However, thanks to Uranus in Churchill’s case, it acts as the in-orb Point Focus of a T Cross enabling him to carry his objectives to a positive conclusion rather than to live under the nightmare of fascist control. With all his Uranian ingenuity, he independently, and almost single-handedly led Britain and the Allies to a victorious conclusion.

The important progressed Sun in Churchill’s chart was also noticeably active on May 10, 1940, as it was applying to an opposition to Point Focus Uranus. At the very moment of his appointment as Prime Minister, Uranus was advantageously activated by the dynamic Sun with its task of fueling energy and light to the genius which ultimately brought peace to a war-weary world.
